REVIEW:

There have been some good 'horse' movies over the years. Francis Ford Coppola's The Black Stallion and Seabiscuit are two of my favorites. It was only a matter of time before someone made a movie about perhaps the greatest race horse of all time, which leads us to Disney's release of Secretariat this weekend.

Diane Lane stars as Penny Chenery Tweedy, the daughter of a Virginia horse breeder and housewife with 4 kids, married to a Denver attorney. When Penney's father (Scott Glenn) has a stroke, she rushes back to the Virgina farm and takes over the operation. The farm is losing money, and after a coin toss, the Chenery farm wins the rights to an unborn foal, which turns out to be a strong red stallion, later named Secretariat.

As Penny takes the reins (no pun intended) of the farm and training of Secretariat, she hires an eccentric retired French Canadian trainer name Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich) to get her prized horse into shape.

Despite long odds, Penny's horse wins a few races. All seems well until Penny's farm runs out of money, and the housewife-owner sells breeding rights to Secretariat at a high price that hinges on the horse taking the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes).
